"Realism"! Yes the word is powerful enough to capture the art lovers as it is a niche to thrive for the most realistic painting or a sketch. The quality of an artist is determined by their ability of how real one can go in case a client is trying to commission a piece or judge one in an artist’s gallery.
Well, this is a subjective issue as the world of realism is filled with admirers yearning for a hyperrealistic work from the artist so that they can compare the same with the actual photo of reference or look for all kinds of intricate detailing. Well, that is fair enough as it is a work of profound finesse.
However, one should consider that not everything about art is realism. There are different genres of art and artists performing the same. Art is merely a three letter word containing numerous possibilities within. It is a direct outcome of a painter’s thoughts and ideas which gets reciprocated in a way for the world to see it. They might be filled with only colours, distinctive designs or patterns, highlighting a particular area and hazing the others, depiction of emotions with brighter or dull colours, going for realistic detailing and what not. The list goes on.
That is their way of communicating to the audience and the art lovers out there. Art is to bring out the wildest of imagination to a single panel, it is something which cannot be tamed in certain boundaries for basic resonance.
This is a similar case wherein a surgeon is expected to perform everything - right from performing a heart surgery to an eye operation. Of course, they might have learnt about each category but then they chose their field of interest and became a specialist later on.
Therefore, for an artist, they might be able to make every kind of artwork but still chose a specific style and decided to stick to it. So, next time someone compares your work with just realism, let them know that isn’t your style unless that’s what you really do.
Even if you can do that, you simply picked your own poise.
